Dog Helps Couple Kick Crystal Meth Addiction

A couple from Washington State who had been struggling to overcome their drug addiction for over ten years finally managed to get clean thanks to the help of man's best friend. Elizabeth Osborn and Devin Dickson have spent the past decade in and out of prison and were unable to find work. They were homeless and traveled around the country, camping in various cities as they failed to kick their drug habit.

Two years ago, their lives changed when they adopted a Border Collie-Red Heeler mix named Alex while they were living in Colorado. They adopted the dog because of "how chill he was" but quickly learned that his laid-back demeanor would change when they got high.

"We found out very quickly that Alex is horrified by the smell of methamphetamine coming out of someone's skin or being smoked," Osborn told Fox28.

One time, Alex tried to bite Devin after he relapsed and started smoking crystal meth. The couple was faced with a choice: give up their drug habit, or get rid of Alex, something they couldn't bring themselves to do.

"It was either Alex found a new home or we stopped using meth, and there's absolutely no way I could've gotten rid of Alex," Osborn said.

The couple has managed to stay sober for over one year and earn money doing odd jobs, like mowing lawns for their neighbors. While they are still struggling to find an affordable and permanent home, the couple is thankful that Alex came into their life.

"It's that perfect love," Osborn said.
