Texas Man Busted For Smuggling Meth With Tacos Across Border

A man from Laredo, Texas, was busted last month for having more than just chips and salsa in his bag of tacos.

Nicolas Castro Jr. is accused of trying to smuggle 1.26 kilograms (about 3 pounds) of meth while entering into the United States at the border crossing in Laredo on September 8, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of Texas.

Authorities at the border inspected Castro's belongings when they found a plastic bag of tacos and chips. The U.S. Attorney's Office didn't say what kind of tacos they were, but the K-9 on duty definitely noticed them. The good boy (or girl) alerted authorities to the secret ingredient hidden among the tacos.

"The contents of the tacos subsequently tested positive for meth," according to a statement by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

A grand jury in Laredo indicted Castro on two counts of conspiracy and importing meth into the United States. If he's found guilty, Castro faces up to a life in prison and a $10 million fine.

Drug smugglers routinely use food to ship their illegal goods. Meth and coke have been found in fruits and veggies, tamales, tortillas, and even bottles of rum.
