A Whitney Houston Biopic Is On The Way

A Whitney Houston biopic is on the way!

The late singer's estate announced the project titled I Wanna Dance With Somebody on Wednesday (April 22), revealing that it will be produced by Whitney's longtime friend and legendary music producer Clive Davis and directed by Stella Maghie, who's previously worked on The Photograph, HBO’s Insecure, and Freeform’s Grown-ish.

As for the script, Anthony McCarten, the writer behind the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody and Netflix’s The Two Popes, was tapped to write the screenplay.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody will follow Whitney's rise to fame and promises to be “frank about the price that super-stardom exacted,” according to the press release.

“From all my personal and professional experience with Whitney from her late teenage years to her tragic premature death, I know the full Whitney Houston story has not yet been told,” Clive said in a statement. “I am so glad that Anthony McCarten has committed to a no-holds-barred, musically rich screenplay that finally reveals the whole Whitney whose vocal genius deeply affected the world while she fiercely battled the demons that were to be her undoing.”

Pat Houston, Whitney's sister-in-law and an overseer of her estate, will produce the movie on behalf of the Houston Estate, along with Clive, Primary Wave Music's Larry Mestel, Denis O’Sullivan and Anthony, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody is not yet attached to a studio, nor does it have a release date.

Whitney was previously the subject of a documentary in 2018, as well as an unauthorized Lifetime biopic in 2015.
