Some mistakes are worse than others. In 2013, James Howells accidentally threw away a hard drive that had Bitcoin stored on it that’s now worth $500 million. He’s asked permission from his town council to search the dump for the hard drive, but the council is refusing…even with James offering the town a quarter of any money recovered.

This sent him looking for experts, and that search led him to a company called Ontrack that’s used by NASA for recovery jobs. The company found the hard drive from the Columbia space shuttle six months after it crashed and managed to recover 99% of the data on it. James recently said, “the hard drive could be worth a billion dollars, and failing to act on it will be incompetence on behalf of the council.”
