On this episode of 90210MG, Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, and Sisanie Villaclara talk about the Beverly Hills, 90210 episode “One-on-One,” breaking down the characters, the fashion, and their favorite one-liners. They also talk about Jennie’s first TikTok, helicopter parenting, Jennie and Tori’s friendship, how they wished Andrea and Brandon had gotten together, Brenda’s “Beetlejuice bangs,” how great the theme song is, and the profound topics the show wasn’t afraid to get into, despite it being known as a “fluffy” show. “It's only episode five, and we’re delving into system racism and the fallout of the school system,” Jennie says. “It was 30 years ago, but the fact is this is a conversation we’re still having.”
Sisanie and Tori agree that the show didn’t get the credit it deserved at the time for taking on heavy topics on primetime television with such a young cast; besides systemic racism, the show had already tackled alcohol, drowning, and adult/child relationships by the time the fifth episode aired. Tori admits she’s a little bitter about it, saying that she feels it was overlooked because her father, Aaron Spelling, was perceived as someone who only made “jiggle TV.” “Every show he did he talked about things people weren’t talking about….I guarantee you, if it had someone else’s name on it, they would have called it groundbreaking,” she says.
But the fluff – and the fashion – is still good, too. They gush about Andrea’s “hot babe” look with her ponytail and tie, and lovingly recall how popular scrunchie socks were, especially layered with different colors. Brandon’s father gives off “stage dad vibes,” Sisanie says, and asks about Jennie and Tori’s actual parenting styles; Jennie reveals that her kids “call me ‘Karen’ a lot,” though Tori and Sisanie vehemently deny that she is one. Plus, was it awkward for Jason Priestley, who was about to hit “hot hunky stardom,” to have an entire storyline about being short? Who had the hot bikini body in the credits, since it turns out that it wasn’t Jennie? And did either Jennie or Tori ever steal their parents' car before they got their license, like Brenda did?
