Maleficent Mistress of Evil premiere

Angelina Jolie opened up about her children's recent health struggles in a powerful essay published in Time magazine. The essay—titled "Why Girls Deserve Love and Respect on International Women’s Day” —begins with the actress and activist sharing that two of her daughters, Zahara Jolie-Pitt and Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, have both underwent surgery over the past two months.

“I have spent the last two months in and out of surgeries with my eldest daughter, and days ago watched her younger sister go under the knife for a hip surgery,” Jolie wrote. “They know that I am writing this, because I respect their privacy and we discussed it together and they encouraged me to write. They understand that going through medical challenges and fighting to survive and heal is something to be proud of.”

Jolie didn't go into much detail about her children's medical procedures, however, People confirmed Shiloh was the "younger sister" to which the Maleficent actress referred. The 13-year-old was photographed walking on crutches while running errands with her mom over the weekend. Jolie also has an 11-year-old daughter named Vivienne. Zahara was also recently photographed attending a Cirque du Soleil performance with her family. She was attached to an IV drip during the outing.

“I have watched my daughters care for one another. My youngest daughter studied the nurses with her sister, and then assisted the next time,” Jolie continued in her essay. “I saw how all my girls so easily stopped everything and put each other first, and felt the joy of being of service to those they love.”

“I also watched them face their fears with a resolute bravery,” Jolie wrote. “We all know that moment when no one else can help us, and all we can do is close our eyes and breathe. When only we can take the next step or breath through the pain, so we steady ourselves and do it.”

Zahara and Shiloh's recent surgeries are reportedly Brad Pitt skipped out on the BAFTAs last month. At the time, he only cited a family commitment as his reason for staying in the states. Both Jolie and Pitt were by their daughters' throughout their recent health struggles. According to People's source, both girls "look to be recovering."
