Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro defeated his Republican opponent Doug Mastriano to become the next Governor of Pennsylvania. Shapiro will replace Governor Tim Wolfe, who is leaving office due to term limits.

While Shapiro handily defeated the Trump-backed Mastriano, the state's Senate race between Dr. Mehmet Oz and Lt. Gov. John Fetterman remains too close to call as of 11:30 p.m. ET.

Shapiro's victory blunts the power of the Republican-held legislature, giving him the ability to veto some of the GOP's priorities, such as limiting abortion. Mastriano, who served as a state senator, sponsored a bill to ban abortion after six weeks.

"Tonight, freedom prevailed over extremism in Pennsylvania. I am honored, humbled, and proud to serve as your next Governor," Shapiro wrote on Facebook.
