Liam Payne Says ZAYN's Mother Forced Him To Audition For 'X Factor'

Liam Payne is speaking about One Direction (once again) and his new interview features some revelations about his former bandmate ZAYN.

Despite the fact that both of the stars discovered fame while in 1D, Payne, 26, admitted to Daily Star Online that he doesn't think ZAYN, 27, enjoys much of it. "Some people are made for this thing but ZAYN enjoys the side of the music where he just gets to make music," Payne said during the interview to promote his new single, "Midnight," with Alesso. "I don't think he enjoys what comes with it. I think he has to be very careful where he treads. He likes to make songs and his songs do very well but at the same time he doesn't really like to go out and perform the songs. He doesn't really like going out and doing the press stuff that surrounds it in the crazy little world that we live in."

Payne went on to confess that he and his bandmates knew for a while that ZAYN wasn't fully invested in the group. "We always kind of knew that there were moments when One Direction was really ZAYN and then there were moments when it really wasn't," he explained. "I remember ZAYN telling us the story that it was his mum got him to go to the audition the day he didn't want to go and that was literally what we saw all the way through One Direction."

Talk of One Direction resurfaced in recent weeks after Payne spilled the beans on the group's upcoming reunion project in honor of their 10th anniversary milestone. Based on a string of interviews, it seems as if Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles will reunite without ZAYN. Yet, fans of the boyband raised eyebrows when all the members re-followed their estranged bandmate on Twitter.

"I think it is a bit premature [to think us reflowing ZAYN means he's back]," Payne continued. "Look at it this the way, every time one of us releases an album it is another two years and now with this [coronavirus] on top of it everyone has had to backlog tours almost and cancel things. We haven't really spoken about a reunion properly."
