Man Finds $10,000 While Renovating Chicago Home - And Returns It To Owner

Renovating his umpteenth home in Chicago, Jim Dow experienced something new.

He stumbled upon five envelopes concealed throughout one of the rooms.

Collectively, those envelopes contained $10,000.

Dow, of HomeVestors, has renovated more than four dozen homes. He bought this one in the Calumet Heights neighborhood to renovate, and has “never seen anything even close to this before,” he told CBS 2. He was “shocked” to find envelopes filled with money behind the couch, behind a photo on the wall and in other hiding spots.

Next, he returned it to Gloria Carter, the home’s former owner of more than five decades.

She and her family were overjoyed.

Her son, Anthony Carter, gratefully reviewed Dow’s work online.

“Throughout the process, Jim was both responsive and professional, while being extraordinarily trustworthy and honest,” Carter wrote, in part. “He helped my family avoid significant financial (loss) by calling us after our business dealings had officially been completed, to return approximately 5 envelopes he had found around the house, containing over $10,000.”

“And after returning the money,” Carter continued,” Mr. Dow refused to accept a reward, instead asking us to just pay it forward.”

Dow explained to CBS 2 that he didn’t want the reward. Instead, he credited “good people in the world,” and expected others would have done the same thing.
