A 12-year-old boy will be recognized by the city council for his service to the community after he mowed 50 lawns as part of a nationwide challenge. Over the summer, Phoenix Browne, of Chesapeake, mowed the lawns of the elderly, veterans, and people in need, all free of charge.
"It was really fun just completing the challenge," he said. "If I could, I would do it all over again."
The 50-yard challenge was started by Raising Men Lawn Care Services in Alabama, which encourages youth to give back to their communities. Phoenix accepted the challenge, and with the help of his dad driving him around, he got to work.
"It's good to see that he wants to do things and it comes directly from his heart," said Phoenix's father Sheldon Browne.
After completing the challenge, Raising Men gave him a new lawnmower, which he loves, calling it smoother and very light. Phoenix also received a new weed eater and leaf blower from the organization.
Mowing 50 yards wasn't always easy. Though some days were better than others, he still had a rewarding experience.
"I feel really good," he said. "Just meeting more people along the way, seeing old faces, familiar people also, it was really fun."
