Mariah Carey Explains Why She Considers Herself 'Kind Of A Prude'

Mariah Carey is unapologetically Mariah Carey in her new cover story for Cosmopolitan and we wouldn't have it any other way.

In the pop titan's new interview with the magazine, which was published on Tuesday (July 9), Carey spoke about her preference for younger men like her current boyfriend/former backup dancer, Bryan Tanaka, and opened up about her sex life in the process. "I haven't had that many, but there has been a variety pack," she declared. "I've only been with five people in my life, so I’m kind of a prude, honestly, compared to most others in the field."

Elsewhere in the interview, Carey touched base on her history of public mishaps, including her infamous 2016 New Year's Eve performance, where the singer experienced a malfunctioned earpiece and refused to sing along with the backing track in Times Square. "If people think that’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to me, then first of all, they haven’t studied my career well enough,” she explained. "After what I’ve been through, who really gives a sh*t if my monitor broke, fell off, came out of my ears because the stupid robe was too loose? These things happen and it’s over. My true fans stick with me, and the rest of the people will get over it."

Now, of course, it wouldn't be an interview with Carey without a little bit of subtle shade. When talking about the art of songwriting, the industry vet had something to say about how contemporary acts navigate the process. "A lot of artists say they write, but they don’t really write. No offense to anybody," she said, adding, "That’s just what I’ve seen.”
