XBox, DJ Blocks, & Michael J. Fox On 'Fake Doctors, Real Friends'

On this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends, Zach Braff and Donald Faison talk about how excited they were to work with the legendary Michael J. Fox on the Scrubs episode “My Catalyst,” as well as the many “random stoner moments” in the script for that episode that made them laugh, like Neil Flynn wrestling his assistant janitor on the roof of the hospital for a beer, or Rob Maschio’s ill-timed XBox joke. Zach also learns from their producer Joelle what a f**kboi is before Alex calls from Amsterdam to ask them about their favorite break-up scenes in movie or television history; then they fix his life by talking about some new hobbies he can pick up in quarantine.

Both Donald and Zach were thrilled to work with Michael; he was one of the biggest movie stars when they were growing up, and they were both obsessed with Family Ties and Back to the Future. They remember that every now and then, Michael would need a break from shooting, but mostly he just turned in a great performance with no problems at all. Zach says Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence wrote this episode specifically for Michael: “He was giving him an opportunity to vent about his Parkinson’s, because that wonderful scene at the end, the character is so fed up with hiding his OCD – but it’s so clearly Michael the human being having a moment, saying ‘f**k you’ to his Parkinson’s.” They talk about his unparalleled comedic timing; much like the character he was playing, everyone on set wanted to learn from him.

Alex calls in to ask them about their favorite break-up scenes in movies or television; Donald says When Harry Met Sally “is a flawless love story...and they have a great breakup scene where Billy Crystal is eating salad,” he laughs. Zach says Annie Hall, and Joelle goes with Blue Valentine; their other producer, Dan, cites a wonderful Simpsons episode when Lisa loses a substitute teacher who was mentoring her. “Man, I love movies,” Zach says. Then Alex asks for advice about changing up his routine in quarantine, saying he’s already tried learning another language; when it turns out that Alex might want to get into DJing, Dan, having been a DJ before, gives him great advice on getting started. “You’re going to be a badass techno DJ,” Zach predicts. “After Covid, you’re going to go, ‘if it weren’t for Covid, I wouldn’t be x-ing my face off with a beautiful model right now!” Hear the entire hilarious conversation on this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends.
